Reminder on truck parking in residential areas

Baw Baw Shire has warned against trucks being parked in residential areas for extended periods.
Under the state's Road Safety Road Rules and council's Local Laws, heavy and long vehicles cannot be parked in residential streets for longer than an hour unless granted a special permit.
A council spokesperson said officers recently acted on a complaint from a resident alleging a six-metre long truck had been parked in a Warragul street for "at least four weeks".
He said council would continue to monitor the matter for compliance.
The resident that drew the matter to council's attention said the truck was a safety hazard because it blocked clear sight for motorists, especially when turning into an adjoining street.
Under the Road Rules drivers of heavy or long vehicles must not stop in built-up areas for more than an hour unless specifically permitted.
Council's Local Law relating to parking of vehicles on private property in residential areas specifies that owners of any vehicle longer than 7.5 metres or with a gross vehicle mass of 4.5 tonnes or greater must obtain a permit to "park, keep, store or repair" for more than one hour or when the driver is picking up or setting down goods.
There are exceptions for registered caravans, motor homes and boats and trailers.
The council spokesperson said people were encouraged to report heavy vehicles parked for extended periods in built up areas so the owners of the vehicles can be educated about the Road Rules and Local Laws.
