Preparing for the Festival of Scarves, Hats and Rugs - which will be held in May next year - is a group of knitters that get together every Tuesday morning in the Garfield Uniting Church Hall.
The group was established 35 years ago by Margaret Dobson and averages about 16 enthusiastic knitters and conversationalists.
"Whilst we sit here and work, we are able to solve about 90 per cent of the world's problems," said Nellie Marsh with a cheeky grin.
Infused with a spirit of generosity, the welcoming environment attracts knitters from near and far.
Their knitting skills produce many needy items such as the knitted Anzac Poppies for the RSL, beanies for babies being transported by ambulance, chemotherapy bags for patients' medication bottles and personal items, octopus toys to occupy baby fingers in hospital so they won't pull on tubing, special jumpers for penguins and a host of other knitted necessities.
The festival next May will showcase the variety and quality of local knitters.
There will be prizes for best judged entries as well as a people's choice award.
Entries can be submitted by anyone which can be sold or donated to a worthy cause after the show.
