Christmas raffle raises $6000

Another busy year of fundraising by Yarragon Lions Club was capped off with a profit of more than $6000 from its annual Christmas raffle.
Winners of the three donated prizes were drawn last Wednesday outside the club's Op Shop in the town's main street and, according to the large turn out of club members there, reinforced Yarragon as a popular place to take a break on trips to and from Gippsland.
Nobody had any knowledge of those that won the first two prizes - "probably people passing through" - the only guide their phone numbers on the tickets that were among more than 4500 sold over the past few weeks.
Third prize went to a well-known Warragul man.
For the record, the first prize of a $500 hardware voucher was won by David Haviland, Jo Scullin can look forward to three night motel accommodation and breakfast hamper at Merimbula after being second drawn and Warragul's John Heenan can toast the festive season with a collection of the finest brews.
Lions Club president Bill Cropley said the club had distributed about $75,000 during the year to a range of organisations, clubs and charities, not just in Yarragon but stretching from Latrobe Health and Longwarry Food Bank to the campaign Support After Suicide.
The volunteer run Op Shop is the club's major fundraiser that is boosted by regular sausage sizzles and the Christmas raffle.
As well as Lions selling tickets in the raffle, Mr Cropley said members of Yarragon Bowls Club had helped out one day a week during the sales period.
