As part of Baw Baw Shire Council's ongoing commitment to responsible pet ownership and animal welfare, residents are being asked to consider becoming a forever home for some of the animals currently available for adoption at the municipal animal pound.
Both cats and dogs are currently available for adoption, however, the pound recently experienced an influx of cats in need of new homes.
Baw Baw Shire Mayor Danny Goss encouraged anyone considering a new pet to visit the pound and adopt before they shopped.
"Animal adoption is a rewarding experience that benefits both the animal and its new owner," Cr Goss said.
"Unfortunately, some pet owners are not practicing responsible pet ownership causing many unwanted kittens and cats to be surrendered to our pound.
"We continue to work closely with local vets and animal agencies to rehome as many animals as we can, but there are still many cats available for adoption right now.
"By adopting from our pound, you're not only gaining a new best friend — you're also giving an animal a second chance at life. Whether you're looking for a cuddly lap cat, a curious kitten, or a calm older companion, there's a perfect match for every household."
All animals available for adoption at the Baw Baw Shire municipal animal pound are de-sexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed, health checked and registered with council.
Cr Jess Hamilton urged interested community members to do their research before adopting a cat.
"Adopting a cat is not just about companionship, it's a lifelong commitment," she said. "Before considering adopting a cat we encourage you to do your research, understand their needs and the responsibilities associated with cat ownership such as the 24-hour cat curfew."
