Kumwenda claims top prize

Drouin superstar Mwai Kumwenda has been recognised for her excellent season with the Gippsland League's A grade best and fairest award in the weekend's vote count.
The Malawi-born goal shooter utterly dominated the count, finishing on 36 votes - 15 ahead of second place.
The result hardly comes as a shock given Kumwenda's pedigree. Fondly known as 'MJ' at the Hawks, she has previously represented Malawi at the Commonwealth Games as well as the Netball World Cup, topping the goal scoring at both on various occasions.
She topped the A grade goal scoring and currently has 751 goals from 18 games.
The Hawks will have to do without her, however, in their A grade grand final this Saturday, as Kumwenda represents Malawi at the Netball World Cup qualifiers in Kenya.
Her win continues a streak for the western clubs in the A grade best and fairest, with Drouin and Warragul having combined to claim the last three awards thanks to wins in 2024 (April Bethune, Drouin) and 2025 (Renee Cook, Warragul).
