Green wedge planning in Cardinia

Cardinia Shire Council is working with the community to create a shared vision for the future of its rural land and landscapes through the preparation of new Green Wedge Management Plans.
Councils are required to prepare plans to guide management of green gedge land to identify the rural values, uses and land to be protected and create strategies that protect, enhance and manage identified values.
The non-urban land that surrounds urban development is separated from urban areas by the Urban Growth Boundary which was put in place by the Victorian Government in 2002.
Council acknowledged green wedges played a critical role in protecting rural landscapes, supporting agriculture and local industries, recognising Traditional Owner connections to Country and ensuring the areas continued to contribute to the health and wellbeing and sustainable outcomes for current and future generations.
Some of the land areas to be examined for the South Ranges green wedge includes Bunyip, Bunyip North, Garfield North, Tynong North, Nar Nar Goon North, Tonimbuk and Maryknoll.
Mayor Brett Owen said Green Wedge Management Plans were an important and useful tool for managing growth while also protecting the shire's rural and agricultural landscapes.
"Cardinia Shire is a major food producing region and we play a significant role in Victoria's and Australia's food security. Preserving and supporting productive non-urban land remains a key priority for council.
"As our community continues to see rapid growth, it is important find the balance between the need for development and the preservation of non-urban land.
"Green Wedge Management Plans help guide that balance by protecting important agricultural land and environmental assets, while ensuring these areas continue to support future generations."
Council is now inviting community members to share their views as part of the first stage of community consultation.
