Community and businessman dies

John Daniels, born and bred in Warragul, and dedicated to his family and local community, died on Friday, September 11, aged 88.

Mr Daniels was a long serving and respected member of the Waragul Lions Club, celebrating a major milestone of 50 years of service in January.

He joined the Lions in March 1975 after several years with the Warragul Apex Club and was elected president in 1978, serving on many Lions committees over five decades.
He was awarded life membership of Lions in 2016.
Mr Daniels was elected to Warragul Rural City Council in 1987 and served until local government amalgamations in 1994.
He campaigned on being concerned, caring, approachable and keeping common sense in council.
He was a strong advocate for the local heated indoor pool and keeping rate increases within the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
During the council elections of 1991 Mr Daniels remarked: "Local Government is the best area of government to meet and respond to people's needs and that is why I enjoy being part of it."
He was returned for another term as a councillor for Baw Baw Shire from 2003-2008, at 67 years old.
Mr Daniels and wife Moira were married for 65 years. They have five children and five grandchildren.
The couple owned and operated local business Travel Plus since 1977, sharing a deep love of exploring the world and helped others realise their own travel adventures.
A memorial mass will be held at St Joseph's Catholic Church, Warragul on Wednesday, September 23 at 11.30am.
