A classic musical is getting a bold new makeover when Warragul Youth Theatre brings CATS: Young Actors Edition to the West Gippsland Arts Centre during the school holidays.
Running from September 29 to October 2, the production features a cast of 30 young performers, supported by an 11-member pit singing ensemble, in a reimagined version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's beloved musical.
Directed by Flynn Francis, this adaptation moves beyond the traditional interpretation of CATS, drawing inspiration from Victorian-era circuses and vintage sideshows.
Each Jellicle Cat is transformed into a unique performer, taking centre stage in a bid to become the next Jellicle Headliner.
Audiences can expect to encounter favourite characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Skimbleshanks, Old Deuteronomy and Grizabella as they gather for the Jellicle Ball.
Through song, dance and storytelling, each cat shares its story while hoping to earn a chance at a new life in the Heaviside Layer.Adding to the spectacle is a visually striking production featuring a larger-than-life junkyard set, hand-painted costumes and individually handmade wigs.
The creative team has worked to create a theatrical world that captures both the whimsy and mystery of the musical's feline universe.
The production showcases the talents of local performers aged eight to 17, with Warragul Youth Theatre continuing its long-standing commitment to providing young people with opportunities to develop their skills on stage in a supportive and creative environment
Beyond the performances themselves, audiences will have the chance to meet the cast after each show, with photo opportunities, autographs and meet-and-greet sessions taking place in the foyer.
Following a string of successful productions and strong audience support, CATS: Young Actors Edition is shaping up as one of the highlights of the local school holiday entertainment calendar.
CATS: Young Actors Edition runs at the West Gippsland Arts Centre from September 29 to October 2. Tickets are available through the venue's box office and website
