Drouin pianist Brian Chapman will hold a lecture-recital about Beethoven's "Moonlight" Sonata at the Yarragon Studio on Sunday, July 6.
Beginning at 3pm, the program will begin with a lecture from Brian titled "Grief, Denial and Rage: A personal odyssey with Beethoven's 'Moonlight' Sonata," followed by a performance of the piece.
To conclude the afternoon, saxophonist Niels Bijl will join Brian for a performance of Cesar Franck's "Sonata in A major."
Beethoven's 'Moonlight' Sonata is one of the most well-known solo piano sonatas ever written, known for romantic associations with love and moonlight.
However, research conducted by Chapman suggests the music that is loved and admired by so many could be historically distorted by a succession of performers, editors and teachers.
So many changes have been made since Beethoven's original autographed score, resulting in a strong focus on phrasing reminiscent of a frustrated romantic love, rather than Beethoven's dumbstruck grief in the face of the tragedy of his growing and irreversible deafness.
Brian will present his contrary view of the sonata in the lecture.
The lecture-recital will be held at the Yarragon Studio, 515 Yarragon South Rd, Yarragon South.
The event will begin at 3pm and conclude at 4pm.
