The West Gippsland Strikers had a great weekend beginning on Friday night as the under 14s got their season off to a great start with a 4-1 win over ECHO.
Playing at home in great conditions the team played excellent team hockey to be ahead 2-0 at half time with goals to Spencer Stephens and Zac Coster.
Tired legs in the second half showed with the structure breaking down just a little - enough for ECHO to score and make the game interesting at 2-1.
The team rallied though, especially the girls with late goals to Zali Gordan and Alexis Hazell. The team song was a little rusty but sung with great gusto.
On Sunday, also at Bellbird Park saw a double header for the seniors.
The women's Strikers team started quickly in their match against Melton Mustangs, scoring the first goal within minutes as they applied a strong defensive press to force the Mustangs to make errors.
The team kept the pressure on for the whole match, running away with the victory 6-1, young gun Charlotte Smith scoring four of the Strikers' goals.
The men's VL squad were up against Latrobe Valley for the first time this season.
The game was played mainly in LVHA's defensive half until Matthew Zurrer broke the deadlock, with Elliot Stephens adding a crisp second before half time.
The game finished 3-0 to Strikers with Matthew Zurrer adding another to his tally.
