As all eyes turn to this week's AFL National Draft there will be a few Gippslanders holding their breath waiting to see if their names will be called.
Leading the charge and being the talk of the town is Foster's Willem Duursma, with the dynamic utility widely expected to be selected at pick one by the West Coast Eagles tomorrow night.
Once selected, Duursma will become the fourth member of his family to enter the professional system, following in the footsteps of his brothers Xavier (Essendon), Zane (North Melbourne) in the AFL and Yasmin (Carlton) in AFLW.
More locally in the Baw Baw Shire area, a couple of names have been floated as potential draft smokies, namely Drouin's Brodie Atkins and Trafalgar resident Thomas Matthews.
Atkins is coming into the draft having turned some heads at the end of a standout Talent League season with Gippsland Power, where he took out the prestigious Morrish Medal - the Brownlow equivalent for the country's premier underage football league.
Atkins played the year primarily as a tough in and under contested midfielder, averaging 24 disposals, seven tackles and five inside 50s. He played his junior career entirely at Drouin and has featured at senior level for the Drouin Football Club on numerous occasions.
Matthews will be hoping a year cursed by injury will not prevent him from being picked up by an AFL club.
The Trafalgar local, who played his junior footy for the Bloods before transitioning to Moe in the Gippsland League, was named skipper of Gippsland Power but managed just four games due to a knee injury.
The livewire forward impressed whenever he had the chance, showing off his trademark defensive pressure and earning a place in the Vic Country squad after booting four goals in a trial match.
Both players were invited to attend the Victorian state combine and while neither are sure things, there'll be plenty of people back home crossing fingers and toes in hopes their names will be called.
This year's draft will again take place over two nights, with the first round of picks taking place on Wednesday night and the rest following on Thursday.
Another Gippsland name in the mix is Heyfield's Mitchell Stevens. The son of former Adelaide Crow Mark Stevens, he will be hoping to get to West Lakes and follow in his father's footsteps.
Richmond VFL listed player Harry Scott is also a name on club's boards. The mature-ager came through the system at Inverloch-Kongwak and Leongatha and has impressed at the Tigers' state level side.
