Josh claims third title at Warragul Country Club
1 min read

Many golfers dream of hitting a competition winning score, but for 21-year-old Josh O’Brien-Reiter, it’s already happened three times.

Josh claimed his third A Grade club champion trophy at the Warragul Country Club last month, where he defeated Matt Long in a close final.

Golf has always been a part of Josh’s life. He remembers walking alongside his father and grandfather while they played round after round, watching, and learning the game.

His grandfather Alan Reiter has been a large influence on Josh. Alan has claimed 15 club championships, a number that has motivated Josh to try and match.

At just nine years of age, he played his first round of nine and shot a respectable 57. Now, 12 years later, he’s hitting off a scratch handicap and matching it with some of the best players in Warragul and Melbourne.

Growing up, he played cricket, tennis and more, but golf became his focus, signing up as a member at Warragul eight years ago.

“There wasn’t really a lightbulb moment for me, it was mostly just comparing myself to my uncle, dad and grandad that’s motivated me.

“I want to try and match my grandfather, but I’m just doing what I can, you want to get more (championships) but I’m also really happy with what I’ve got,” he said.

Josh also uses the sport to escape the working week, heading out for a round after hours.

While winning club championships is something he strives to achieve, playing with his mates is one of the most enjoyable parts about the game.

Josh is facing off against players who are often double his age, but he hopes his recent success draws the younger generation towards the course.

“There aren’t a heap of young kids who play now, so hopefully seeing that young players can play too might get others involved.

“Even in Melbourne I don’t see many young people playing, you kind of hope they get into the game and knock you off in the end,” he said.
