Two from three for Garfield
2 min read

It was yet another two wins from three matches for Garfield bowlers this week.
Division two: Garfield defeated Neerim District 74/65
The top Saturday side hosted Neerim District at "Garfield Arena", coming away with three rinks up.
The team of Graeme Burton, Bob Lamport, Jasmine Fowler and skip Les Pumphrey played a very tight match until half-time, with scores tied four times. After the break, the Garfielders hit their stride and ran away to win, 21/13.
Geoff Pumphrey, Gordon Moxey, John O'Shea and skip Joe Lenders were well in front early, being 10-shots up at half-time. Seemingly, a nap ensued but they woke up just in time to win, 17/14.
The team consisting of Lexi Taylor, Gerry Fuller, Cheryl Breteler and skip Alan White took a while to get themselves going, down 6/14 at the halfway point. Moving up a gear, they stormed home to barely miss out on the win, 17/20.
Stephen Whyte, skipping the team consisting of Ron Saunders, Henry Breteler and Gary Helmore, lost four shots on the first end. They got them back by the sixth end and lost them again, sitting four shots down at the turn of the card. Not to be held back, the Garfielders raced home to win by the slightest margin, 19/18.
It was a good performance to maintain second place on the ladder.

Division five: Garfield (2) defeated Warragul (3) 59/57
Winning two rinks, Garfield won the day by a very close two-shot margin.
The team of Jan Moxey, Len Preece, Steve Hyam and skip Gwen Fabris struggled all day against a very strong opposition team, losing 15/28.
The team skipped by Brian Fox and consisting of Keith Cooke, Gerry Wakefield and Brad Fowler also started slowly. They were down 1/8 after six ends before the teams swapped roles. In the end, the Garfielders won easily, 25/11.
Rick Sillett skipped the team of Frank Prins, David Piggin and Malcolm Newham. They had a similar game as the Fox team - chasing early, then grinding back. The rink ended the day with a win by the smallest of margins, 19/18.
This good result sees the side move up to third position on the ladder.

Midweek
Travelling away and playing on a very wet grass green, Garfield did well to win one rink against Traralgon RSL on Tuesday.
Division four: Garfield lost to Traralgon RSL (2) 41/63
The team skipped by Gwen Fabris and consisting of Lexi Taylor, Trevor Peters and Bob Lamport started well and led by two shots at the halfway point. However, in what turned out to be a relatively low-scoring game, the home team slid past them at the end to inflict a 12/17 loss.
Alan White's team, consisting of Cheryl Breteler, Gerry Wakefield and Gordon Moxey, were eight shots behind after five ends, with nothing to show for it. While they recovered those shots by the end of the game, their opposition had swept away to provide a 9/29 loss.
The team of Graeme Burton, Geoff Pumphrey, John O'Shea and skip Malcolm Newham fought out a tight tussle in the first half to be square, 12-all, after 13 ends. The Garfielders skipped away in the second half to win, 20/17.
The side remains in second place on the ladder, trailing only Traralgon RSL.
