Determined Gulls claim brilliant win over Traralgon
4 min read

Warragul are on the board this season after claiming a brilliant win over Traralgon on Saturday.
In challenging conditions, the Gulls were tougher for longer than their opponents as they won 8.8 (56) to 7.7 (49).
Playing for one of the club's favourite sons Cooper Alger, who suffered a work-related eye injury, the Gulls looked determined to get the win for their beloved teammate.
After losing to the undefeated Moe by just one point last week, Traralgon would have fancied their chances against a Warragul side that had struggled in their prior two games.
But the Maroons were in for a rude awakening with it was clear from the first bounce that the Gulls were in for the fight this week.
In wet and slippery conditions, neither team were able to move the ball as skilfully as they would have liked, turning the match into a war of attrition to see who could put their bodies on the line for longer.
And while Traralgon, as one of the league's better sides, certainly pushed hard, they were found wanting against a desperate Warragul team that tackled fiercely all day.
Nick Graham was a standout for the Gulls, racking up possessions in the midfield and looking a class above with his foot skills when he found space, despite the weather.
Graham also contributed two goals for the day in what was an all-round excellent performance.
The Gulls found plenty of silver service from their ruck duo of Mitchell Smart and Sam Whibley, who are fast becoming one of the best big man tandems in the league.
Both teams found the early going to be quite tough as they tried to adjust to the rain. It was clear that Traralgon weren't going to get it all their way, as every time they kicked a goal Warragul found a way to get it back.
Two first half goals to Brayden Fowler and individual goals to Graham and Mitch Nobelius ensured that Warragul would take an eight-point lead into the half time break.
With the rain picking up in the second half, both sides were content to just boot the ball forward at all costs and gain territory for their side.
Traralgon had clearly lifted their intensity in the third quarter, keeping the ball locked in their forward half for large stretches of time.
Two consecutive goals from high contact free kicks to Traralgon's Matthew Northe gave Traralgon the lead back in the third. After Northe kicked his third for the quarter shortly after, the Maroons were up by 10 points and looking good.
A late goal to Gulls forward Jed Lamb following a beautiful pass from Nick Graham kept Warragul in touch, as they went into the final break seven points down.
With a potential first win in sight, Warragul threw everything they had at Traralgon in the final term, and their pressure lifted.
Despite this, they just couldn't quite find a way to score. After Maroons star Brett Eddy threaded the needle with a tough set shot from the boundary, the Gulls appeared to be in trouble.
But they didn't give in, as Lamb responded quickly with his second goal after a free kick.
A brilliant diving tackle by Mitchell Smart gave the Gulls a holding the ball free inside 50, with Smart passing it off to Graham who nailed the shot on the run to give Warragul the lead.
Another goal to Nicholas Mulqueen a few minutes later sent the margin out to seven points, with the rest of the game seeing Warragul playing ferocious footy to hold on for their first win of the year.
Coach Dean Alger said he "knew we could match it with some of the better sides."
"Coming into this week training was good and there was a really good vibe which was fantastic," he said
"We knew in the conditions today it was going to be reliant on effort and effort only, and our effort was fantastic today for four quarters."
Alger said he and the players were very confident that the club's fortunes could "turn around very quickly."
"We still believe we're good enough to match it with anyone on our day," he said.
"We just needed one to get across the line and we got that today."
Warragul will next play away against Leongatha in what is almost certainly the Gippsland League's toughest test, while Traralgon will play Wonthaggi in a match that promises to tell us a lot about where both teams sit this season.
Warragul's best players were Nicholas Graham, Mitchell Smart, Sam Whibley, William Cole, Patrick Mulqueen and Nicholas Mulqueen.
Traralgon's best were Matthew Northe, Tom Schneider, Conor Little, Mitch Membrey, Mark Collison and Luke Johnson.
