Brilliant Brown curtails Crows in division three

by Samuel Laffy
Longwarry (127) vs Trafalgar (0/9)

Zack Brown's stunning six-wicket haul helped Trafalgar end the first day's play in a dominant position in their clash with Longwarry, the Ships requiring just 119 more runs to clinch first-innings points.
Having spent considerable time in Trafalgar's division one line-up in recent seasons, Brown thoroughly outclassed the Crows' middle and lower order, as his sustained pressure and ability to constantly challenge the defensive techniques of batters ensured a flurry of wickets.
Daniel Pullen (34 from 86) did his best to anchor Longwarry's innings, while Ali Sarosh (22 off 90) and Cole Cook (19 from 73) provided valuable resistance, but Brown's haul of 6/34 was simply too much to overcome, the Crows dismissed for 127 in the 64th over.
Left with just three overs to face, the Ships' openers – Anthony Faltum and Oliver White – batted sensibly to ensure there were no late wobbles, reaching 0/9 at stumps.

Catani (1/7) vs Western Park (124)
A lush outfield made scoring difficult at Catani on Saturday, and the Cats took full advantage in a parsimonious bowling display that saw them sitting in the box seat at the end of the first day's play against Western Park.
However, in the early part of the day it seemed as though the Warriors would overcome the conditions, with Dale Fawcett (27 from 32) and Sam Cheeseman (23 off 67) combining for a spritely 42-run opening stand.
Fawcett's removal – edging behind chasing a wide offering from Nathaniel Wade – saw scoring slow however, and once Catani took pace off the ball pressure mounted on the Western Park middle order.
Fletcher Kennedy (a patient 20) was able to resist the accuracy and teasing nature of extended spells from Bailey Sporish (3/28 from 21) and Glen Easton (2/21 off 16) but his removal, edging Geoge Zekic behind, triggered a tumultuous collapse of 6/13 that curtailed the Warriors' innings.
Zekic's wily ways are infamous in division three and his ability to target the outside edge proved too much for the tail to handle as he claimed 4/13.
Dismissing Western Park for 124, the Cats were left with a challenging late afternoon stint, and Matt Finger (0 from 16) had his stumps disturbed by Connor Fleming (1/5 from 5) as Catani reached 1/7 at the close of play.

Garfield-Tynong (3/12) vs Jindivick (147)
Whilst Jindivick might not have been thrilled with their batting performance on the weekend, a late flurry of wickets sees them enter day two of their clash against Garfield-Tynong holding all the momentum.
The top and middle order struggled against the likes of Grant Pearson (4/42 from 22 quality overs) and Jamie Denton (3/47 off 12), and the scoreboard at one stage read 7/87.
However, Tharindu Wathudura (36 from 61) combined with Shane Hoskins (a watchful 13) and William Stevenage (a classy 25) to boost the total late, dismissed for 147 in the 58th over.
Garfield-Tynong would no doubt have been satisfied with their efforts in the field, but their top order left a lot to be desired in the nine overs they faced out to stumps.
Stuart Horsburgh was first to depart – his stumps sent flying following an ill-advised leg-side swipe – and Phill Young was lured into a lofted drive that only found the waiting hands of Thomas Stevenage soon after.
Ranga Bandara (2/2 from 2) then trapped Matt Trofa in front on the verge of stumps to leave the Titans 3/12.

Ellinbank (9/264) vs Warragul (yet to bat)
Having batted brilliantly in a sterling run chase against Western Park in round four, Ellinbank continued their impressive batting form on day one of their division three clash with Warragul, with the Eagles setting the Gulls a challenging run chase next weekend.
Beginning positively thanks to a better-than-a-run-a-ball 28 from opener Brayden Rintoule – whose innings was cut short thanks to a sharp catch in gully by Tejvir Singh Malhi – Ellinbank's middle order adopted a more watchful approach, recognising the importance of batting out the full 70 overs.
Jaxon Cook (17 from 59) and Brad Berry (10 off 50) blunted some tight bowling from Kieran Morton (1/46) and Malhi (4/44 from 13.5), and their patience allowed the likes of Ryan Bosch (53) and Harmanpreet Singh (55*) to attack late in the day.
Harmanpreet, who was particularly brutal through the leg-side, delivered the stand-out innings of the day, his ability to find the boundary helping lift Ellinbank to 264 before they were dismissed in the 70th over.
