Drouin young gun Brodie Atkins took home a major honour last week when he won the Morrish Medal, crowning him the top player in this year's Talent League.
The Gippsland Power midfielder who plays locally for the Hawks polled 20 votes to claim the coveted medal, two ahead of Power teammate Willem Duursma.
Atkins averaged 24 disposals, seven tackles and five inside 50s, polling seven times in 13 games in what was his second year with Power.
He was named best on ground on six occasions.
Atkins also featured three times for Vic Country and was named in their best for their round five win over the Allies.
Speaking after his win, Atkins said he was initially shocked when he learned he had won.
"It was pretty surprising at first but it's good," he said.
"I felt like I had a pretty consistent year."
Atkins was told he had won the medal weeks before its official announcement and had to keep it a secret from his Power and Drouin teammates.
He was allowed to tell his family, who he said found it pretty challenging to keep quiet.
"I was actually at Gippy Power training when it was announced, the boys got around me which was good."
Atkins has played his entire career at Drouin in both juniors and seniors. He featured once for the Hawks in 2025, playing in their round three loss to Wonthaggi.
He now has an eye on the upcoming AFL Draft Combine as he hopes to work his way up the draft board.
Given some of the past Morrish Medal winners include AFL stars like Hugh McCluggage, Clayton Oliver and Dyson Heppell, safe to say he's in good company.
