The Gazette labelled it "a day for making history" when the Queen's message travelled into Warragul via the Commonwealth Games baton on its way to Brisbane.
The 1982 Commonwealth Games were held in Brisbane from September 30 to October 9, with Australia winning 39 gold medals, 39 silver and 29 bronze.
This included Raelene Boyle's gold in the 400m, Neil Brooks' three gold medals in swimming, Lisa Curry's three gold medals in swimming and Robert de Castella's gold in the marathon.
The two sections of the relay through Buln Buln and Warragul shires were run by local athletes, including representatives from the Little Athletics Club.
