A photograph capturing a group of Warragul Apex Club volunteers in action in Burke St Park, Warragul in 1967.
The photograph, taken in December, captured the Warragul Apexians digging foundations for an undercover barbecue area. This commenced the park's picnic area.
Burke St Park is now a popular area for families, with two picnic and barbecue areas for gatherings, the skate park, Linear Trail, trees offering shade in summer, regular markets and soon to be the location for a new bike pump track.
The picnic area development was only the second big community project undertaken by the Warragul Apex Club. Just prior to this, they had built the Mawarra Opportunity Shop.
Apex is a volunteer service organisation, with local clubs responsible for many projects across West Gippsland.
Several clubs have since merged, with the area currently served by the Drouin, Warragul and Districts Apex Club.
Earlier this year, Apex Picnic Area and Lookout at Neerim South was in the news. The park's name was put out for community feedback by Baw Baw Shire.
However, noting the work of the now defunct Neerim South Apex Club in establishing the Main Neerim Rd park in the 1960s and the vital role Apex volunteers had made in maintaining the community facility in the decades since, councillors voted to keep the Apex name.
