Gippsland Water may need to release more treated water into a Warragul creek as its wastewater treatment plant expands.
The water authority is conducting a survey to find out how local residents use Hazel Creek. Results will factor into planning.
As Warragul grows, Gippsland Water said more people would use toilets, showers, sinks and washing machines. To cater for increasing demand, the capacity of the current wastewater treatment plant needs to double by 2060.
"Increasing the capacity of the plant may mean releasing more treated wastewater into Hazel Creek," Gippsland Water stated.
It noted the release of wastewater happened at the end of the process after water was treated and safe to be returned to the environment.
