A Phillip Island resident will be chosen as an independent candidate supported by the Voices for Monash group at the Federal election due to be held by next year.
Two nominees, both from Phillip Island, will present their cases at a Voices for Monash (V4M) members only event at Inverloch on Sunday afternoon ahead of a vote. Their presentations will also be live streamed.
Voting by registered members of the group will close at 6pm on Monday of next week with the candidate to be announced the next day.
The choice is between Deb Leonard of Cape Woolamai, who contested the seat as an independent supported by V4M in May 2022, and Ventnor resident Tim O'Brien.
Ms Leonard gained the third highest primary vote of the eight candidates in the 2022 election.
The seat was retained by Liberal Russell Broadbent who has since resigned from the party and sits in parliament as an independent.
The Voices candidate will have the financial backing for the campaign of climate focused organisation, Climate 200 (C200), convened by prominent businessman Simon Holmes a Court, that provided more than $13 million to selected independents at the 2022 election.
V4M president Fiona McKenzie said the C200 funds were "more than welcome" to cover expenses of running a campaign.
