Detectives executed a search warrant at a property in the Yarragon area on Thursday as part of a significant arson investigation.
Baw Baw police services area acting inspector Glenn Parke said Baw Baw Crime Investigation Unit had been investigating about 20 arson incidents, predominately occurring on the north side of the Princes Fwy between late October and April.
Typically the fires were ignited using available roadside vegetation in the Neerim East, Shady Creek, Buln Buln and Willow Grove areas, he said. However, dumped vehicles and the old Yulungah school building near Trafalgar also had been targeted.
Following the execution of the search warrant, act insp Parke said two men were assisting with police inquiries.
He expects charges to follow at a later date.
Act insp Parke said the fires had been ignited during a time when the district was susceptible and could have resulted in larger blazes.
"It's been a significant priority for police and the fire agencies because of the dry conditions we've gone through," he said.
Anyone with information which may assist police investigations is urged to contact Baw Baw CIU at Warragul police station on 5622 7111.
