Baw Baw Shire residents who have outstanding fines for failure to vote in last year's local council elections are being urged to act now.
The Victorian Electoral Commission warned residents who receive a penalty reminder notice not to ignore it.
The penalty notices, which residents may have received last week, now carry a fee of $29.20 in addition to the original $99 fine. Failure to act will see the matter referred to Fines Victoria.
In April, 4005 residents - almost 10 per cent of the 45,084 people on the Baw Baw Shire's electoral roll - received infringement notices for failure to vote without a valid reason.
For those who failed to pay the fine, electoral commissioner Sven Bluemmel advised acting as soon as possible.
"If you receive a penalty reminder notice in the mail, you have three options: pay the fine, request an internal review or elect to go to court," Mr Bluemmel said.
"Please get in touch with us if you have any questions or require further clarification, because once we hand it over to Fines Victoria for enforcement action, we are unable to further assist."
Non-voters have 28 days to respond to the penalty reminder notice.
