Icy event raises $31,000
1 min read

Twelve locals took an icy plunge to raise money for FightMND at The Garfield Hotel's fourth annual Big Freeze event.
Held last Monday, the event raised $31,000, bringing the four year total to about $108,000.
The Garfield Hotel owner Brad Alden-Brown estimated a crowd of 500 to 800 people attended to support the "sliders."
"We've had the pub six years now, we put events on and do what we do and they (the Garfield community) just support really well with feet, they turn up in venue."
"It's a great day because there's people there and there's atmosphere, people hang around and they'll buy raffle tickets. They support us really well regardless of what we do."
Twelve locals took on the icy slide, dressed in an array of costumes including Sharon Strzelecki, Shane Warne, Queen Elizabeth, Dame Edna, Fred Flinstone, Woody from Toy Story, a chicken and a wrestler.
"I have to hand it to them, they really put in with their costumes this year, they did it well," Brad said.
Brad said he was inspired to start holding an annual Big Freeze event after someone close to him lost family members to MND.
"He was the main reason I started it, but after that, all these stories come out about how many people have been touched by MND, it's quite huge," he said.
Brad said The Garfield Hotel would continue running a Big Freeze event for as long as people support it.
"We'll hold it as long as people come and we raise money," he said.
