Honora chosen for new suburb adjoining Pakenham
1 min read

A woman who first farmed an area near Pakenham more than 150 years ago has been honoured in the naming of a new major suburb.
Honora will be the name of the suburb expected to accommodate 7000 homes in parts of Pakenham, Nar Nar Goon and Nar Nar Goon North.
Honora Carney and her husband Michael initially leased a large parcel of land between Pakenham and Nar Nar Goon in the late 1860s.
The name chosen for the proposed new suburb was one of seven given names of women that made significant contribution to the district, with Honora attracting more than one-third of 1840 responses from Cardinia Shire residents during a five-week consultation period.
Cardinia council is now working with the family of Mrs Carney, who still own property and live in the area, to select a suitable suffix (extension) to the name Honora, such as Park or Fields, for approval by Geographic Names Victoria (GNV).
Council will also seek GNV approval for changes to the names of Mount Ararat North and Mount Ararat South roads.
It is proposed Mount Ararat North Rd become Mount Ararat Rd and the southern section be named Hannah Rd, honouring Hannah Duff, another of the few women farmers in the district's early days of settlement.
The naming of Hannah Rd will also be submitted for community consultation before any formal application for GNV approval, council says.
