A community information session will be held in Yarragon on Thursday night to help residents understand Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects proposed in the local area.
Large-scale BESS projects are being proposed for Darnum by Samsung Renewable Energy Australia and Shady Creek by ZEN Energy.
The facilities are designed to store electricity and support grid stability as part of the transition to a more sustainable energy system. While the developments claim to offer exciting benefits, they also have raised questions from local residents, including environmental impact, land use, safety considerations, and community involvement.
The Baw Baw Sustainability Network (BBSN) is hosting a community information evening to allow residents to hear from a subject-matter expert and a developer.
The event aims to provide factual, balanced information and an opportunity for local residents to ask questions and share concerns.
Guest speakers include chartered engineer Ian Hill who will provide an overview of BESS; the rationale for the selected locations; and, address key risks, potential benefits, and concerns.
Samsung C&T Renewable Energy Australia (SREA) development manager Stephen Mitchell also will address the meeting. He will discuss Samsung's proposed BESS in Darnum and will take questions and listen to community views.
BBSN believes the proposed projects will have a direct and lasting impact on the region so residents deserve transparent, accurate information.
The session will provide an open forum for community questions and dialogue.
BBSN said understanding the implications of BESS developments was essential for informed public engagement.
Residents with an interest in the future of energy infrastructure in West Gippsland are encouraged to attend.
The information night will be held this Thursday, September 25 at the Yarragon Uniting Church Hall in Campbell St at 7pm.
