Public transport will be free for every child and teenager under 18-years-old in a free travel initiative announced as part of the State Government budget last week.
With the aim of reducing the cost of public transport for families, the Allan Labor Government announced a free travel initiative that will provide free public transport for every child, every day, everywhere.
Transport Infrastructure Ministrer Gabrielle Williams said the government had been putting money back into the pockets of Victorians with the regional fare cap, which had already saved Victorians more than $132 million in its first two years.
Now, public transport will be free for all travellers under the age of 18.
The program will make Victoria the first state to introduce free public transport for children and teens, with the investment beginning from January 1, 2026.
And for seniors, free travel will be available on weekend. In another budget initiative, all Seniors Card holders will have access to free public transport across the state on weekends.
Currently seniors enjoy free travel on weekends in any two neighbouring zones, allowing for short trips. The new investment will extend free travel to seniors anywhere across the state on weekends.
"This is a budget focused on what matters most – making it cheaper and easier for families to get where they need to go," Ms Williams said.
In Gippsland, the budget will invest $42.8 million to deliver a regular 40-minute interpeak service across the day, between Traralgon and Southern Cross – realising the benefits of the Gippsland Line Upgrade.
