A Bureau of Meteorology weather station at Nilma North, due to be decommissioned on July 1, may continue.
Baw Baw Shire has initiated talks with the bureau to continue its contract beyond that date.
The Bureau of Meteorology website currently has an alert message on the Nilma North data page informing community members that "from 1 July 2025 the Bureau of Meteorology will stop receiving data from the Baw Baw Shire Council's Nilma North (Warragul) automatic weather station."
However, council officers have confirmed the shire is working with BoM to keep the station open.
Shire acting community infrastructure director James Robinson said council originally commissioned and funded the project, which included installation of the weather station at Nilma North, to ensure access to local weather data that could support disaster assistance claims - particularly for storm response and the recovery of costs associated with repairing storm-damaged assets.
Mr Robinson explained ongoing operational management of the station had been provided by the Bureau of Meteorology since the installation more than 10 years ago.
"Council has reviewed the ongoing requirement for this weather station, and given its use has increased the local weather data for the community, it is intending to enter into a renewed maintenance agreement with the Bureau of Meteorology," Mr Robinson confirmed.
