An online fundraiser has been launched to secure the future of Food Relief Neerim District.
The volunteer-run service, which currently supports more than 320 families, launches its GoFundMe campaign this week.
It aims to raise $165,000 to boost its services and support a transition to a long-term, safe, discreet and appropriate premises.
Currently located under the stage at the rear of the Algie Hall, Food Relief has outgrown the space. It has located a new premises close to the centre of Neerim South which would allow for purpose-fitted-out facilities.
Community members recently made a Baw Baw Shire budget submission seeking the funds. However, after an unsuccessful bid, the group is now appealing to the wider community for financial assistance.
Food Relief Neerim District began operation 14 years ago, supporting just five families. Today it helps some 320 families across Baw Baw Shire, with more than 20 per cent of its clients based in Drouin and Warragul.
The primary function of food relief is to provide much-needed food support to those in need. Its services also include transport to medical appointments, Centrelink help and connecting people to the broader community.
The committee expects the number of families requiring support will increase to more than 400 by the end of the year.
The committee is currently seeing an increase of previously financially secure families seeking food support.
