Friendship group's craft is centre stage of festival

A group of women that regularly meets at Garfield is staging a festival to display the craft work it does to benefit a range of district causes.
To be held at the Uniting Church hall at 13 Garfield Rd, Garfield on Saturday, May 24, the festival will feature hats, scarves, rugs and many other things.
The Garfield Craft and Friendship Group has come a long way since it first formed 35 years ago.
Founder Margaret Dobson, who is still actively involved, said it began when a small number of people got together to make some Christmas decorations.
She said she thought it would be a "one off" thing but developed into regular get-togethers to make things.
The group now comprises 16 members including some who travel from Yarragon, Pakenham and South Gippsland.
Ms Dobson said members made some items for their own use but the main focus was on meeting needs of community organisations.
Rugs for nursing and aged care homes had been particularly welcomed and members recently made 50 Teddy bears to be given to young children that have experienced a trauma, such as an accidental injury.
