Fire restrictions now in force
1 min read

Fire restrictions are now in force throughout Baw Baw Shire.
The measures applied from the start of last week with Baw Baw among the last group of CFA fire districts in the state to have them applied this summer.
CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said there had been a delayed start to restrictions in the area but he warned of the need not to be complacent and residents could expect high risk fire conditions in coming weeks.
He said people needed to be particularly aware of the potential dangers from barbecues and campfires and the use of machinery such as chain saws, farm equipment and welders.
Detailed information about what is required during the period of restrictions is available on the CFA's website and at the VicEmergency hotline 1800 226 226.
Permits are required for any burning off during the restricted period.
Strict conditions apply and permits can be applied for at www.firepermits.vic.gov.au but liability is on permit holders to ensure they act safely.
No fires can be lit on days when a total fire ban is declared.
Mr Heffernan said simple actions people could take to keep their properties tidy and reduce fire risk were to move woodpiles away from homes and sheds, prune trees so they don't overhang or touch buildings, clean guttering and keep grassed areas shorter than 10 centimetres.
