The greyhound adoption program (GAP) of Victoria is holding an adoption day at Logan Park this Sunday from 11am to 12.30pm.
The event is being held across the state at four locations including Ballarat, Broadmeadows, Springvale and Warragul and hopes to introduce prospective owners to potential new canine members of the family.
It is the first time GAP has held its "Super Sunday Adoption Bonanza."
Greyhound adoption has become an increasingly popular option for pet owners. More and more Australians are becoming aware that greyhounds not only boast a placid nature, but they are excellent companions that don't require a lot of exercise and are happy to spend most of the day sleeping. GAP fosters de-sexxed, vaccinated, wormed and health checked greyhounds helping to transition them from racing animals to pets.
According to GAP adoption manager Larissa Hubbard, many prospective dog owners don't realise the following facts about greyhounds. "They require little grooming, they are quiet and rarely bark and that they sleep for around 20 hours a day," said Larissa. "Most greyhounds only require a 15-minute walk each day but can make great jogging companions with some endurance training. They are also co-operative, adaptable, placid and affectionate, they are suited to living in many types of households including small houses and apartments."
Greyhounds who pass the GAP program undergo a thorough temperament assessment to ensure they are safe around smaller dogs.
For $100, community members can adopt a greyhound and they will receive a lead, collar and coat for their new family member.
"People wishing to learn more but not necessarily adopt straight away are welcome on the day as well," Larissa said.
