Cardinia residents recycle nearly 12 tonnes of hard to recycle items

Cardinia Shire's first Recycling Drive and Drop event saw residents recycle almost 12 tonnes of e-waste, polystyrene, soft plastics, textiles and cardboard.
Held at the council depot in Pakenham on July 10 and 11, the successful event provided an opportunity for residents to drop off items that were often difficult to recycle. An impressive 419 vehicles drove through the depot during the event, an average of one vehicle every 90 seconds.
Cardinia Shire mayor Jack Kowarzik praised the community's enthusiastic participation. "Over the course of the weekend, we saw hundreds of cars drive through, each one representing a conscious decision to recycle responsibly," Cr Kowarzik said.
"Not only have you cleared out those hard to recycle items from your home, but more importantly you have helped ensure nearly 12 tonnes of waste will be reused or recycled, instead of ending up in landfill."
Due to the success of last month's event, Cardinia Shire Council have locked in the January 10 and 11 weekend in 2026 for the next Recycling Drive and Drop event.
