Baw Baw Shire has been an early adopter of glass recycling bins (purple lids) while other councils in Gippsland have held off.
The State Government has set July 2027 as the date by which all councils must provide the service to households.
In Baw Baw the purple lid bins were distributed last year and first collections were in October.
Neighbouring Cardinia Shire council, that has not yet implemented the program, is now calling on the government to postpone the 2027 deadline.
It has cited cost and the positive uptake of the government's Container Deposit Scheme, a 10 cent refund for each can and bottle, as reasons to delay the introduction in its shire.
Mayor Jack Kowarzik said he was thrilled with the uptake of the CDS in Cardinia which showed, that with some simple changes to expand the program, would achieve similar environmental benefit (as the purple bin collection) and be more cost effective.
He said research indicated the extra bin would add about $27 a year to each households waste collection charge while the money raised from the CDS went back into the community, local businesses, charities, schools and sporting groups.
Using existing infrastructure and resources to expand recycling efforts would minimise the financial cost, Cr Kowarzik said.
Baw Baw Shire mayor Danny Goss said the early adoption of the new bins in the shire was decided upon because of "big financial concessions" the government provided but are not available to those councils, including the other five in Gippsland, that deferred their introduction.
The latest bin - the fourth waste bin for Baw Baw residents - for disposal of glass bottles and jars, are emptied every four weeks. Lids and cork from those containers need to be placed in the red general bins.
