The Barkin Mad Ultra race will return to Rokeby this weekend.
After the popular inaugural event last year, Hair of the Dog rescue will present its second event at Rokeby reserve this Saturday and Sunday.
The Barkin Mad Ultra is an opportunity to grab your canine friends and running shoes and get ready to help out dogs in need.
The fundraising event is about dogs running to save dogs, with all funds raised supporting the work of Hair of the Dog Rescue.
Organised by local veterinarian Amy Hewitt, the "Barkin Mad Ultra" is a dog and human trail running festival with 2km walk, 5km and 10km walk/run events and 20km and 50km runs. Events are split over the two days.
The ultra-running festival celebrates the human and animal bond.
Founded by Liz Behrendorff and a group of passionate dog lovers in 2015, Hair of the Dog Rescue is a charity in Baw Baw Shire dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming dogs in need.
In order to get dogs into their "fur-ever" homes, Dr Hewitt said Hair of the Dog Rescue paid for any veterinary care a rescue dog may need.
All the money raised through the "Barkin Mad Ultra" will be put towards Hair of the Dog Rescue to help the charity continue their work.
Dr Hewitt said the inspiration for the event came from her own rescue dog, Molly, who loved to go trail running.
Last year's event raised $13,000 and organisers are hoping to raise the bar this year. Entry fees range from $35 to $275.
All dogs must be on leads fir the entirety of the race. No retractable leads are permitted.
Last year's inaugural event also was recognised in Baw Baw Shire's Australia Day awards, being awarded a medallion.
