The annual Job Skills expo for students across Gippsland was held at Lardner Park last Tuesday.
Co-ordinated by the Baw Baw Latrobe Local Learning and Employment Network (Baw Baw Latrobe LLEN), the Job Skills Expo has become a major event for schools and industries in the Gippsland region.
It targets year nine and 10 students and other young people to help them gain exposure to employers, training and other community organisations with a presence in Baw Baw, Latrobe, South Gippsland, Bass Coast, Wellington and East Gippsland Shires.
More than 3000 students from across Gippsland attended the event and were able to learn from more than 100 exhibitors about jobs available in the region and the various skills and qualifications required for them.
Many exhibitors had a focus on hands-on activities to show students what might be involved for a particular career path.
Exhibitors across a variety of new and established industries were on hand to answer questions and provide advice to students. Some emerging industries - allied health, emergency services, the Defence Force and other trades provided some exciting and interactive displays.
TAFE Gippsland showcased its array of training courses, including community services, health studies/nursing/aged care, screen/media/visual arts, beauty, agriculture, automotive, electrical, painting and decorating, bricklaying, carpentry/cabinet making and foundation/transition studies to name a few.
The expo also was a good chance for parents new to the area to gain greater knowledge of what is available for their children. It was an opportunity for organisations to strategically support a major skills awareness and development activity for Gippsland.
