Students from five local primary schools recently participated in the Warragul Lions Club's annual junior public speaking competition.
The participating schools included Drouin, Warragul, Darnum and Warragul North Primary Schools and Chairo Christian School.
The program is for students in years three to six and aims to encourage students to participate in public speaking, which helps build their confidence and allow them to hone their natural skills.
The competition increases the students' ability and opportunity to communicate to a wider audience – which includes their family, friends and teachers.
It is not unusual to see quiet, shy students, too timid to speak, stand up and deliver a speech that has blown away the judges and have gone on to win the competition.
The students participating this year were: Audrey Clark (grade 5/6, Drouin), Alana Lucas (grade 5/6, Warragul), Ari Boutros (grade 3/4, Chairo), Jackson Wilson (grade 3/4, Darnum), Grace Stevens (grade 5/6, Darnum), Ned Pugh (grade 3/4, Warragul North) and Henry Pugh (grade 5/6, Warragul North).
After much deliberation the winners were Darnum Primary School students Jackson Wilson and Grace Stevens, who were presented with a trophy to display at their school.
