A business which evolved from tragedy has given Carly Harris and her mother Lynn Pemberton a new direction.
Officially launching OG Baked Goods at the Warragul Farmer’s Market earlier this month they sold out of trays of sweet treats in just 25 minutes.
After some prep work the night before, they set to work at 3.30am to stock their stall with scrolls, croissants and bagels.
Before launching into baking Carly was a midwife at Monash Medical Centre. Together with husband Mat they were expecting their first child.
Carly had experienced a normal pregnancy and they were excitedly awaiting the birth.
However, at their 32-week scan there were complications and Carly had an emergency caesarean.
Olivia Grace was born with a rare medical condition and lived for only a week.
Carly, who had spent her career looking after mothers and babies couldn’t imagine returning to her work.
The fledgling business evolved from mother and daughter chats and a long-held passion to turn their love of cooking into a business.
Lynn had followed her daughter to a new life in Warragul five years ago. In an endorsement of their new direction, it was the farmers and art and craft markets which sealed the move for Lynn and her husband from an apartment in inner Melbourne.
Lynn also found the Baw Baw Food Hub and took on working there.
While Lynn and Carly may be novices, Lynn’s library of 250 cookbooks ensured they had many recipes to trial before perfecting their own niche selections.
They bake at The Hogget Kitchen and sell their breads and pastries on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Baw Baw Food Hub in Queen St, Warragul.
Anticipating grandmother duties, Lynn had left her position at the hub but now works there as a volunteer.
When they were formulating the business Lynn was working on suitable products while Carly’s role was merchandise and marketing.
The name OG Baked Goods is in memory of Olivia Grace.
