Rock 'n' roll at new community event

Families in West Gippsland are being invited to put their devices down and take to the dance floor at the "Family Rock 'n' Roll Dance", a new community event organised by the McCaffery Family.
On Friday night, the Algie Hall in Neerim South will be transformed into a rocking dance hall, filled with musical hits from the 50s and 60s, performed live by the McCaffery Family band.
The initiative was created in response to growing concerns that young people are spending more time in front of screens and less time moving and connecting in person.
"Rock 'n' roll is the perfect choice," event organiser and musician Malcolm McCaffery said. "It's music that anyone can move to, no set steps, no pressure, just freedom to make up your own dance and enjoy yourself."
While the McCaffery Family has previously hosted traditional bush dances, where a caller guides participants through each step, the rock 'n' roll approach allows for spontaneity and self-expression.
"Bush dancing is wonderful for learning structure," Malcolm said, "But rock 'n' roll gives kids and families a chance to move however they feel, and that's empowering."
Even if you think you've got two left feet, Malcolm encouraged people to come along and enjoy the music.
"If moving's not your thing, you can sit back, sing along, or just enjoy live music played by our five-piece family band." Malcolm explained. "It's about creating a space where everyone feels welcome."
The Family Rock 'n' Roll Dance will run from 7pm to 9pm on Friday, October 17 at the Algie Hall in Neerim South. All ages are welcome. Children 16 years and under must be accompanied by an adult guardian or parent.
Tickets can be purchased online at https://bit.ly/NeerimSouthRockAndRoll or at the door with cash or EFTPOS.
