A collection of work by Tom King and Roger Terrill is currently on display at the WAS Gallery for the "About Wood and Music" exhibition.
The latest exhibition at the WAS Gallery shines a light on the beautiful wooden creations of Roger Terrill and Tom King.
Aptly titled "About Wood and Music," the exhibition features a range of hand-crafted wooden instruments made by Roger and Tom.
Both woodworkers with a passion for music, Roger specialises in drum making from his Rokeby studio, while Tom creates bespoke guitars from his Chadstone workshop.
The craftsmen have a keen knowledge and appreciation of the qualities of wood but are also accomplished musicians, as demonstrated at the exhibition opening last month.
Roger commenced an apprenticeship in fine furniture in Pascoe Vale in 1994. Since then, he has worked in a number of different fields including cabinetmaking and aged care.
His collection in the exhibition includes box cajon drums, snare drums, African drums, didge boxes and a full drum kit.
On entering, the viewer is first struck by two large, model yachts in beautiful detail and ready to sail. Roger takes great delight in making these magnificent crafts but also in sailing them.
His skills in furniture making are represented by a unique chest of drawers, called "The Bachelor Chest", made from a variety of timbers with intricate inlays.
In 2001 he met Mat Duniam, a kit drummer, and between the two of them developed what today is Red Rock Drums (Aust). In 2002 Roger created Terrill Percussion, building African drums and performing and teaching African percussion.
A collection of Tom King's handcrafted guitars will be on display as part of the "About Wood and Music" exhibition, ranging from ukuleles and acoustic and electric guitars, to guitar stands.
Tom has worked in Melbourne and the Netherlands where he became an instructor at the De Haan Guitars' School of Guitar Making. His background in materials engineering has promoted experimentation with uncommon materials and novel building techniques. Tom can be often found teaching guitar and furniture making at The Shed, in Melbourne.
His display at WAS Gallery includes a range of his domestic wear, including cutting boards and coasters made from beautiful timber off cuts. Nothing is ever wasted.
"About Wood and Music" will be on display at the WAS Gallery until Saturday September 6. The Gallery is open from 10am to 4pm, Wednesday to Saturday.
